While in principle, everyone supports the idea of a free press, in practice there seems to be ever greater appetite for restraining it. Without total freedom of the press, are we jeopardising the role of the media as a check on politicians, institutions and businesses? Do we even have a free enough press as it stands? Wasn’t the Leveson Inquiry itself a form of state interference? Who can we expect to scrutinise unelected, unaccountable judges if the press is cowed? Filmed at the Battle of Ideas this debate formed part of the media strand and provides many vital insights. Speakers include: Professor George Brock, Mick Hume, Christina Patterson & Raymond Snoddy. The chair is Patrick Hayes.
