From Jesse Owens defying Hitler at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin to Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving a ‘black power’ salute at the Mexico Olympics in 1968, politics has long mixed with sport. But is sport in danger of being consumed by wider cultural issues today or is it part of a healthy cleansing process?
