Reassessing paternalism: Is autonomy a myth?

In this riveting panel discussion filmed at the Battle of Ideas festival at the Barbican in October 2015, speakers and audience never fail to engage us with their thoughts on autonomy today. The Enlightenment idea was that we should stop ‘outsourcing’ decisions about how to live our lives to external agencies, be it the church or the monarchy. Today, new forms of authority have taken their place, leaving us childlike in relation to new experts. Should we accept the new paternalism if this means sacrificing our own agency and free will? The speakers are: Dr Tim Black, Dr Katerina Deligiorgi, Dr Daniel Glaser, Professor Mike Kelly & Professor Georgios Varouxakis. The chair is Claire Fox.
