Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) are blanket powers which allow councils to criminalise and ban otherwise legal activities within a specified area. From fines for rough sleeping and begging, to bans on swearing and socialising, PSPOs only require a single council officer to judge whether an activity has a ‘detrimental effect’ on the ‘quality of life’ of an area. At this important protest in Hackney, East London arranged by the Manifesto Club, we learn that the overregulation of public life and disregard for civil liberties seriously damages our capacity to engage with our fellow citizens.
