We are going to investigate and explore the arguments for and against the sustainable development of the rainforest. By presenting both sides of the story, this section will help us to develop our own opinions about the issues and controversies surrounding the development of the Amazon.
First we will look at biodiversity, global warming and indigenism. These are some of the key issues which are most often used to explain the need for the sustainable development of the Amazon. We will then look at differing opinions on sustainable development programmes in the Amazon, which are funded by Western governments and NGOs. We will analyse the arguments for and against extractivism and agroforestry. Both of these examples are important, since they are promoted as the key models for sustainable use of the forest.
